Sales of Tom Joyner Platter at Long John Silver's Provides Scholarship Money for African-American Students; Prairie View A&M and North Carolina Central University Will be First to Receive Funds
LOUISVILLE, KY, February 12, 2004 - During January, more than 60,000 Long John Silver's customers purchased Tom Joyner Platters. Those purchases help support Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), as Long John Silver's makes a donation to the Tom Joyner Foundation for each platter sold. The estimated contribution for the first month of the year-long partnership is more than $12,000.
"Black History Month is the perfect time to be reminded that African-American students of today are the history makers of tomorrow," said Mike Baker, Chief Marketing Officer for Long John Silver's, Inc. "January was a great start for our relationship with the Tom Joyner Foundation. And because February is Black History Month, this is a perfect time for Long John Silver's and our customers to show even greater support for HBCUs."
Joyner is a nationally syndicated radio host, entrepreneur and philanthropist whose four-hour drive-time show is heard in more than 115 markets by nearly eight million listeners. The Tom Joyner Foundation helps students continue their education at HBCUs by providing scholarships.
Prairie View A&M University will receive the first proceeds from the LJS/Tom Joyner partnership, and North Carolina Central University will be the recipient of the February donation. Plans call for both check presentations to be made at Joyner's March 12 Sky Show in Richmond, Va.
A Sky Show is a wildly popular broadcast of the Tom Joyner Morning Show, done before a live audience and featuring national recording artists. With up to 20 Sky Shows a year, it is the largest free, live African-American entertainment series in the country.
The Long John Silver's/Tom Joyner Platter offer runs through the end of 2004. Joyner's image is featured on Long John Silver's point-of-sale materials at participating restaurants.
